Kombucha is a fizzy, fermented sweet and sour tea packed full of probiotics (friendly bacteria), antioxidants and flavours. In order for kombucha to ferment (or brew, which is a waaaay cooler term), it requires a “culture” – a cultivation of bacteria. Kombucha gets its starter-culture from a “mother” which is formed by bacteria and yeast (similar to how yogurt and sauerkraut are made, both of which are delicious but dear lord not together). Every new batch of kombucha tea needs a mother and this matron is known as the kombucha SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast). Unlike bottled sodas and other carbonated beverages, each batch of Kombucha is uniquely created. Sweet!
What Genius Created Kombucha?
Kombucha is a magical drink shrouded in mystery and myth (Sounds hot! Still best served cold). It’s widely thought that Kombucha tea first surfaced in China (and the area that is today known as Russia #landgrab) as far back as 220 B.C. It’s hypothesized that the drink was spread by monks throughout the Far East, which makes sense given the purported medicinal properties and HEAVENLY taste. In fact, during the Tsin Dynasty of 221 B.C., Kombucha was known as “The Tea of Immortality” and was given to the Emperor to keep him young, healthy, and sexxxy AF. It was also referred to as the “Elixir of Life”, but, as Harry Potter Fans, we maintain our loyalty to Flamel and disavowal the claim.
Wait… So Will Kombucha Make Me Live Forever?
